When i was young I would lay in my bed at night and listen to the trains passing through town. Their wails shattered the stillness of night and echoed balefully across the inky farmland. They seemed to mourn the decline of the small towns they travelled though as they clattered alone through the darkness

I have been enamored with warplane nose art from the 20th century since I was young. My parents took me to an air show when I was little and I became obsessed with the bombers of World War II; especially the B-17 flying fortress. I have been lucky enough to tour the plane in this piece–quite an amazing machine.

I was always curious what my Dad did for a living, so I looked through his briefcase when I was young; I was curious what he kept concealed in there. He was an insurance adjuster and had pictures of house fires, tornado destruction, and various disasters; but the car wrecks were the most shocking images I found. Nothing steals your innocence quicker than seeing the blood-soaked interior of a car crumpled up like a discarded piece of paper–sometimes the void stares back.

My first car was a 1952 Plymouth which had been in my family for 3 generations. My Dad was an antique car enthusiast and took me to shows before I could drive. We would wander around listening to music from his youth while looking at all the amazing machines from a bygone era; with their shiny chrome, rounded curves, and exaggerated fins. I always felt like I had been born during the wrong period in history; sometimes I still do.

Sometimes the events we witness are indelibly seared into the deep recesses of our minds; providing us with the ability to relieve moments with vivid clarity. I visited San Francisco on a roadtrip when I was young. We stayed in a motel which bordered one of the poorest and most dangerous sections of the city. One night, on the way back to the motel, I almost stepped on a homeless woman laying on an grate for warmth–quite a shock. Homelessness was unheard of in the small rural community I was from in the Rust Belt; it isn’t anymore. I was struck by the contrasting themes of wealth and poverty located within the constraints of a single city block.
